3. Oxy-combustion power plants
3.1 Oxygen production and oxy-combustion boilers
The basic concept of oxy-combustion is simple: replace air with pure oxygen (with a purity of at least 95%) in an air separation unit (ASU) to burn a fossil fuel either in a boiler or in a gas turbine. The combustion products then form a mixture of CO 2 and water vapor, from which the CO 2 can easily be extracted by condensation of the water.
To control the adiabatic flame temperature, which can rise from 1,900°C with air to 2,800°C with 95% O 2 , an inert gas is required, and to do this the combustion products, namely water vapor, CO...
