1. Combustion turbines

These machines have undergone considerable progress, thanks to advances in materials that have increased the compression ratio and combustion temperature, synonymous with performance gains. The configuration of combustion turbines has evolved. Aeronautical machines tend to be of the aeroderivative type, while the most powerful, used for land-based applications, are of the heavy-duty type.

1.1 Aeroderivative turbines

These machines are derived from aeronautical techniques. The combustion chambers are integrated into an assembly known as a gas generator. Instead of delivering thrust through a nozzle, it expands its burnt gases through a turbine driving an alternator. The gas generator may simply be a slightly modified aircraft engine.
