 INTRODUCTION

This article does not present a specific combined-cycle power plant, but offers a general introduction to this energy production method. After a few definitions, the theoretical aspects are discussed in order to present the specificity of the combination of two thermodynamic cycles (Joule and Hirn cycles). The concept of the combined-cycle power plant is not new, but recent developments in combustion turbine technology have generated efficiency gains and unit power increases that have led to renewed interest in this technology. The details needed to understand these developments are then presented, particularly in terms of theory, technology and the environment. The popularity of these plants can also be explained by their modular nature, which is why the different configurations that can be envisaged are discussed, as well as the criteria for choosing and integrating them into an operating park. The economic criteria on which investment choices are based at national level are also detailed.
