A wide variety of fluids are used in air-handling and air-conditioning systems.
Air, of course, is ultimately the fluid occupying the working or living space of the occupants, for which thermal comfort conditions are sought. These thermal comfort conditions are essentially conditioned by particular temperature and humidity values, as shown in the figure Psychrometric diagram and comfort polygon, on which the comfort and discomfort zones appear. Air is generally blown into the room at specific temperature and humidity conditions, and extracted from the room to ensure regular renewal of the environment. The air vector therefore performs a dual function: providing acceptable thermal comfort (air-conditioning and heating), but also air quality through air renewal (ventilation).
