2. Coal gasification
By its very nature, combustion is a set of phenomena taking place in the gaseous phase. When the fuel is not gaseous, combustion is preceded by a stage of transformation into a gas through evaporation, pyrolysis and partial oxidation. In conventional pulverized coal burners, gasification and gas combustion are not dissociated, and only a global phenomenon is observed.
History of gasification
The idea of separating the gasification and combustion phases is a relatively old one. According to available historical data, coal gas production was first used in England in 1792.
