6. Become compliant

Until recently, implementing an energy management system (EMS) in accordance with ISO 50001 was a voluntary process, although strongly recommended by national and international authorities. The Energy Efficiency Act ( Directive européenne sur l’efficacité énergétique du 13 septembre 2023 ^), in force since January 1, 2024, imposes new obligations on companies based on their energy consumption.

If your annual energy consumption exceeds 23.7 GWh/year, you must implement an EMS certified according to ISO 50001.
