The era of carbon-based fossil fuels can be seen as a very brief parenthesis in the history of mankind, in particular the very brief period when our main energy source was oil (around 150 years, a very short period in our history). More generally, we can see that mankind has gone from solid to liquid to gaseous energy sources (figure 1 ).
