Overview

ABSTRACT

The efficient storage of heat and cold, especially for a long time, are important ways to save energy, and would greatly enhance the potential use of solar thermal energy. The different methods of heat storage are presented with the main existing or developing technologies. Two distinct areas of application need to be considered, heating and cooling of buildings being the main one, followed by heat storage at high temperature for industry, especially for concentrated solar power applications. The advantages and disadvantages, applicability, and development prospects of different thermal storage options are presented, with descriptions of practical applications.

AUTHOR

 INTRODUCTION

Renewable energies, particularly solar power, are a very important resource, but they are diluted and variable, and often lag behind demand. The availability of efficient, cost-effective storage facilities would greatly improve their penetration. The case of electricity is well known and documented. The storage of heat, mainly of solar origin, is also a very important area of clean, low-carbon energy, but is generally less well known. The aim of this article is to introduce the principles and issues involved.
