The photovoltaic effect, named after VOLTA, inventor of the first electric battery , was discovered in 1839 by French physicist Alexandre Edmond BECQUEREL. He demonstrated before the Académie des Sciences that when two platinum or gold plates are immersed in an acidic, neutral or basic solution, they produce an electric current if exposed to solar radiation. He thus discovered the "photovoltaic effect".
