1. Basic concept

1.1 What is a direct-contact heat exchanger?

This is an exchanger with no physical separating wall between two fluids flowing in co-current or counter-current (figure 1 ). The absence of a wall is an intrinsic characteristic of the heat exchanger, or is sought to improve certain specific qualities of the exchanger. The interface between the two fluids can take two forms:
