1. Definition and diagram of an insulating system

The following terms are taken from the ISO, CEN and NF standards cited in [Doc BE 9 859].

Thermal insulation system: a combination of two or more components, at least one of which is an insulating product or material. The performance of the system is the performance of the whole.

Thermal insulation: a material, product or system whose presence reduces heat transfer through the wall on, or in, which it is placed. It is characterized by its surface thermal resistance (expressed in m 2 · K · W –1 ).
