As the hydrogen storage process in LOHCs is cyclic, it comprises two units: a hydrogenation unit and a dehydrogenation unit. These units may be located on the same industrial site, in the case of long-term storage, or at distant locations (or even on different continents) in the case of energy transport.

In general, they are designed and sized for a single pair of LOHC molecules. This is due to the storage capacity and physico-chemical properties of LOHC molecules, which can be very different from one pair of LOHC molecules to another. For a versatile process that can be used for different LOHC molecule pairs, hydrogenation and dehydrogenation units need to be reconfigured between each campaign, or they need to have been designed in advance to be versatile. In this section, only the general characteristics of the process will be discussed.
