Monitoring operations organized in France (and Europe) show that many reinforced concrete structures (bridges, buildings, etc.) or components of structures are suffering from deterioration, the two main causes of which are, firstly, corrosion of the reinforcement and, secondly, alkali-reaction.

1.1 Reinforced concrete reinforcement corrosion findings

The 1997 IQOA "pathology" database indicated that 28% of the sample of bridges inspected were affected by reinforcement corrosion. Corrosion is induced by the carbonation of concrete, and/or by the penetration of chlorides for structures in marine environments (submerged, in tidal zones, subject to splashing or spray, etc.), or exposed to de-icing salts in environments at risk of freezing (direct contact, projections,...
