4.1 Importance of water-accessible porosity

Water-accessible porosity is a key parameter for assessing and predicting durability. It is an indicator of material quality. This parameter correlates fairly well with average compressive strength: when porosity decreases [due to a lower water-to-cement ratio (W/C), the addition of ultrafine particles, etc.], strength increases (cf. § 1.1.1).
