Véronique BAROGHEL-BOUNY: Doctorate from the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées - Public Works Divisional Engineer - Head of the "Microstructure and durability of concretes" section at the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées (LCPC)
INTRODUCTION
This article presents a performance-based, global and predictive approach to the durability of reinforced concrete structures, based on the notion of durability indicators, and combining laboratory measurements and calculation codes (models). This approach was developed for the prevention of reinforcement corrosion and alkali-reaction degradation within the framework of the Association Française de Génie Civil's working group "Conception des bétons pour une durée de vie donnée des ouvrages - Indicateurs de durabilité", and has been the subject of a Guide.
In this article, the aims of the approach and the selected sustainability indicators - simple parameters but particularly relevant to the physico-chemical mechanisms at play in a given environment - are presented, along with the basis for this selection. The methods available for determining sustainability indicators are also explained.
