Aggregates can be natural, artificial, or recycled.

Natural aggregates are mineral grains that come from solid or loose rock that has undergone no processing other than mechanical processing.

Artificial aggregates are mineral grains produced by an industrial process involving thermal or other transformations.

Recycled aggregates are obtained by processing inorganic material previously used in construction.
