2. Concrete, a material for architectural expression

2.1 Types of architectural concrete

A distinction is usually made between three types of architectural concrete, which are used in both the building and civil engineering sectors:

  • white concrete, composed solely of white constituents (cement, sand and gravel in particular);

  • light-colored concrete, made from white cement combined with light-colored aggregates; its color depends solely on the aggregates (no additional colorants);

  • all other architectural concretes, which can be made from a mixture of white or grey cements, and use any type of aggregate compatible with the intended application; they can be tinted using coloring pigments (metal oxides in particular) to ensure...
