3. Calculating weld seams

3.1 Calculating butt welds

If the welding procedure is followed correctly, the filler metal used for butt welding is assimilated to the base metal. To determine joint strength, the calculation is therefore based on the cross-sectional area of the groove, i.e. the penetration zone.

Depending on penetration, two types of butt welds are defined: full penetration and partial penetration.
