4. Welded studs

In steel-concrete composite construction, connectors are frequently used to develop the composite action between the steel beam and the concrete. The connection thus provided is essentially designed to resist horizontal shear, and is referred to as a "shear connection".

Two main types of connector are encountered: welded studs and nailed connectors. The latter are described in [C 2 521] . The former, assembled by welding, are discussed here.
