5. Main characteristics of road bitumen

5.1 Needle penetration (EN 1426)

Needle penetration is the depth of penetration, expressed in tenths of a millimeter, of a standardized 1 mm diameter needle, under a 100 g load, applied for 5 s to a bitumen sample maintained at 25°C (figure 3 ).

Penetrability is one of the two fundamental characteristics that define a bitumen.
