2. Designing concrete pavement joints

2.1 General considerations, movement probabilities

Above, roadway slabs are in contact with the ambient air, whose temperature varies, and below, with the foundation and the soil, whose temperature is different and fluctuates less.

Moreover, friction on the substrate reduces the possibility of thermal movement.

Finally, it is not possible to calculate each slab joint individually, so we limit ourselves to calculating average movements.

Example

if a pavement has 100 transverse joints per km, spaced 10 m apart, joint no. 69 may be fixed, for various reasons; as a result, joints 68 and 70 will have to accommodate the fixity of joint 69, and it's likely that the other joints...
