4. Types of caulking products

A small number of products (silicones, polyurethanes) are common to both the Public Works and Building trades.

The following is a list of products used in construction, and we'll look at some types that are only used in construction (asphaltics, bitumens and hot-cast plastisols).

4.1 Asphalt, unmodified and modified bituminous sealants

They are the most widely used sealants in public works, thanks to their low price – around €0.75/kg in 2002 for an asphalt or bituminous sealant and €1/kg for elastomer-modified asphalt, which justifies their use in large sections.

They are hot-cast, from melters, at 150-200 ˚C and solidify in a few minutes, on cooling.
