3. Geotechnical properties applicable to earthworks

As we have seen, properties relating to soil mechanics are generally important for earthworkers.

One area of particular interest to him is the application of geotechnics to earthworks.

This field involves the study of certain characteristic properties of soils, in particular their nature and condition.

Remember that cohesion and the angle of internal friction, as well as the phenomenon of expansion, depend on these two major factors.

Soil is a material essentially made up of distinct solid grains, which may also contain water and air. The grains are on such a scale, in relation to the volume of the soil under consideration, that the law of large numbers is applicable.
