     INTRODUCTION

We have opted here for a presentation of the classification of materials according to the technical guide "Réalisation des remblais et des couches de forme". As indicated in the previous dossier , this guide, which is specifically dedicated to earthworks on road infrastructures, is the most comprehensive document available to support our argument.

The GTR guide is based on feedback from construction sites concerning the reuse of materials, and focuses on making the most of the resources encountered on site, thus helping to improve the economy and environmental quality of projects.

In its first version in 1992, the GTR guide replaced the former "Recommendation for Road Earthworks" (RTR) published in 1976.

The second version of the GTR guide, reissued in July 2000, has undergone minor fine-tuning and modifications. Today, this guide is applied by the entire profession (project owners, project managers, engineers and contractors) to the design and construction of earth structures for roads and freeways.

In other areas, it is applied in part, or at least as a reference rule, in addition to specific requirements or recommendations for other functions of structures.

In the rail sector, we should mention the "LGV civil engineering reference guide". This document, currently being revised, will incorporate an economic approach based on the references and methods recommended by the GTR, which is only partially applied in this case.

This document provides an overview and comments on the GTR classification system. For more detailed information, please refer to fascicule 2 of the GTR.
