3.1.1 Lime stabilization

Chemical stabilization of dewatered sludge is a unitary sludge treatment operation following the dewatering stage. It is therefore carried out on pasty sludge. The reagent used is essentially lime.

This is the final step in sludge treatment: limed sludge is then discharged from the plant for agricultural use, or may be disposed of in a landfill for ordinary or similar waste (e.g. "class II landfill"), but is rarely incinerated.
