1. Clarifications and terminology

Fatigue refers to the progressive damage caused to structural details by fluctuating or repeated stresses, leading to cracking and eventual failure.

  • All structural details susceptible to fatigue must be identified and fatigue-tested.

    • In the case of a smooth part, cracking can originate from microscopic grain-scale defects, or from edge defects caused by flame cutting or drilling, for example.

    • In the case of welded constructions, there are always defects due to the weld: in this case, it's rather from a weld bead that a crack can start.

    Nota

    Finishing treatments can delay this phase, thereby considerably improving the structure's lifespan.
