3. Conclusion

The upkeep and maintenance of our structures and infrastructures represent a major challenge for our societies. The environment built in reinforced concrete dates mainly from the post-war period, and is in urgent need of upgrading, when it is not already too late and the only remaining solution is demolition.

Damage to reinforced concrete structures is always linked to the presence of water and, in common environments, to the corrosion of reinforcement, which causes swelling of the steel and spalling in the concrete. Taking into account the environment in which the structure is built is fundamental, not only in the case of new construction, but also in maintenance and repair situations.
