1. Rules used in France

1.1 Pre-1977 period

Originally imported from the United States and Canada, shingles are used in accordance with the specifications or installation manuals drawn up by the manufacturers or distributors of products from these countries.

The manufacture of shingles in France from 1966 onwards by Siplast, with fiberglass reinforcement (Vertuile shingles), is based on the same provisions. The first booklet was published in 1968, and would undergo further editions or appendices in subsequent years, with the approval of the inspection authorities.

The first NF standards for shingles were published on an experimental basis in 1977, then as a standard in 1979 NF P 39-301 – May 1979 : Plaques de bardeaux bitumés à armature en feutre cellulosique...
