AUTHOR

 INTRODUCTION

The first reinforced concrete structure was designed in 1855 by French engineer Joseph Lambot. Since then, this material has become widely used in construction (buildings, bridges, retaining walls, etc.). The arts are no exception, with a number of structures built entirely or partly in reinforced concrete, such as the structure of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro or the church in Le Raincy. Its many advantages are the reason for its worldwide success.

This article is the first in a series devoted to reinforced concrete. Its aim is to provide a brief introduction to this material: after a reminder of the principle behind this type of concrete, it goes on to describe its advantages and disadvantages, possible uses and current standardization.
