2. Properties of steel's micrographic constituents

2.1 Ferrite – phase α

Ferrite is iron containing a small amount of carbon in solid solution. It is characterized by low hardness (80 HB) and low tensile strength (Rm = 300 N/mm 2 ). Ferrite is highly ductile (A = 35%), malleable and shock-resistant.

Ferrite is the softest phase in steel, conferring good toughness and formability. Commonly found in low-carbon steels, it is sought after for applications requiring ease of fabrication and resistance to impact loading.
