4. Influence of other factors

4.1 Fatigue resistance

Unlike static stresses, where the strength of welded joints can be close to that of the base steel, dynamic or cyclic stresses (fatigue) significantly reduce the mechanical strength of welds. Fatigue fractures often occur suddenly, without any prior plastic deformation or elongation. They generally occur in the immediate vicinity of the welded joint, often at the interface between the molten metal and the base metal.
