IRSID abacus; IRSID chart

Graphical tool to evaluate the cooling rate between two critical temperatures (often 800°C and 500°C) as a function of welding energy and part thickness.

Arrachement lamellaire; lamellar tearing

Cracking that occurs in the thickness direction of a rolled sheet, often parallel to its surface, due to perpendicular stresses.

Buttering

Technique consisting in depositing a layer of soft or ductile metal before welding to reduce stresses in the interface zone.

Calamine; mill scale

Layer of metal oxides formed on the surface of steels during heating, to be removed before welding.

Carbon equivalent

Empirical formula used to assess the hardenability...
