6. Conclusion

We have studied the basic physical constitution and operation of the DC motor, then modeled its operation with various excitation modes. In the second article, we'll look at questions relating to the dimensioning of DC motors.

The following are the main points to be borne in mind.

  • A DC motor is a speed-controlled actuator, which doesn't vary much when the torque changes.

  • Operation in defluxed mode allows acceleration above rated speed, with proportional torque loss.
