Let's take a look at the phenomena occurring at a metal/liquid interface. The metal is considered chemically inert, and can only exchange electrons with the liquid. If the liquid is a perfect insulator (i.e. with no impurities likely to dissociate or provide donor or acceptor levels), the most likely mechanisms for creating charge carriers are field emission at the cathode, field ionization at the anode and ionization by electron impact
