1.1 Definitions and conventions

A dipole is an electrical component, or more generally a portion of an electrical circuit with two terminals, characterized by the relationship between the voltage at these terminals and the current flowing between them.

The interconnection of two dipoles leads them to share the same voltage and current (figure 1 ). Whatever the sign conventions chosen, it is obvious that the conventional direction of the current is outward for one of the dipoles (D1 on figure
