Figure 1 shows an output filter consisting of an inductor and a capacitor. One trend is to make every effort to reduce the size of these passive components. We'll see later that the goal of high dynamic performance calls for a smaller capacitor, but this must be compensated for by a higher switching frequency. Reducing the size of the output capacitor is also key to the DVS approach. Controlling the correction time for disturbances on the output voltage means minimizing capacitor charging and discharging, i.e. also reducing the current supplied to or drawn from the capacitor.
