2. Design optimization algorithms

In this section, we will review the main optimization algorithms used or developed for electromechanical design. Particular emphasis will be placed on algorithms and codes that we have tested on several occasions in concrete actuator design cases.

It's important to note that there is no one perfect optimization algorithm that will solve all electromechanical design problems accurately and reliably. Indeed, these design problems are by nature very different, leading to very different associated mathematical models. As we shall see in the following, optimization methods can be based on the calculation of derivatives, if these are computable (if the functions are differentiable) and inexpensive in terms of CPU time.
