     INTRODUCTION

This article on electrical technical regulations covers a doubly vast field: firstly, because of the diversity and scope of the field covered by the term electricity, and secondly, because of the juxtaposition – or even superposition – of two regulatory origins: European and French. So as not to make this article too heavy, developments have been limited to the purely electrical field, excluding electronics and IT, except where closely related to electrical engineering. In addition, only the main elements of regulation have been mentioned: directives and decisions at European level; laws, decrees and orders at French level, without exhaustiveness; similarly, some sectors of the electrical field may not have been covered.

The regulations concerning installations, those enacted for the protection of workers and those concerning equipment are presented in succession, all presented from both a European (where applicable) and a French perspective. The texts mentioned in the article are those in force at the date of the article; they may have been supplemented or clarified by notices, circulars, decisions, etc., which are not cited in the present article.

Some themes may not have been addressed: the main reason for this is the absence of official texts relating to these themes, or uncertainty as to how they are to be developed.
