3. Defect Removal

To fulfill their purpose, protective measures must:

  • detect the presence of a defect;

  • identify the affected structure;

  • control the disconnecting devices, the opening of which will isolate this facility (and only this facility) from the rest of the network.

3.1 Fault detection

  • Protection devices continuously monitor the electrical state of the power system by tracking a number of characteristic electrical parameters (currents, voltages, frequency) or combinations of these parameters (power, impedance, etc.); they can also monitor other physical parameters such as fluid pressure or temperature.
