4. Multiplexer operation

Loading a quantity of information into a charge-coupled register and reading it serially via a common reading device opens the door to multiplexing, i.e. the serialization of information that is generally available in parallel. This feature is useful when the amount of information available is so dense as to preclude the use of individual connection techniques. This is the case, for example, when processing signals from sensor arrays [10] . A linear multiplexer, hybridized with the sensor, provides an elegant solution to the technical problem of wiring the outputs.
