  • Depending on the power, characteristics and performance required, DC/AC converters also differ in terms of the semiconductors used and their operating modes:

    • switches are bidirectional in voltage and unidirectional in current in current switches, making them the preferred application for thyristors;

    • switches are bidirectional in current and unidirectional in voltage in voltage inverters; these switches always consist of a controllable semiconductor connected in antiparallel with a diode and, for this reason, voltage inverters are the preferred field of application for modern power semiconductors, which are fast but support little (or no) reverse voltage.
