3. Basic functions of microsystems

In microsystems, as in microelectronics, the aim is to be able to proceed with a top-down design, i.e. to start with the general specifications of a product and progress by simulating assemblies proposed by the designer. The results of these simulations provide a precise assessment of performance, dimensions and related manufacturing processes: this is microelectronic design, which means that manufacturing can only be launched with a very high probability of success.

In microsystems, component libraries are still insufficient, models still imprecise, and technologies not yet standardized. Intermediate experimental testing is therefore necessary to make all product functionalities operational.
