3. Electro-optical phase modulation in a diffused waveguide

3.1 Optical guidance by metal diffusion in LiNbO3

An optical waveguide traps light in a small channel, around 10 µm 2 , in which the light injected propagates in a zigzag pattern produced by total internal reflections. These reflections are possible when the guiding medium has a higher refractive index than the surrounding media.
