3. Transformers

Transformers are used to transmit electrical power. The voltage and alternating current supplied to the primary winding are transformed into one or more secondary voltages generated by one or more secondary windings. This transformation takes place through a magnetic circuit; primary and secondary windings are therefore generally perfectly insulated.

Figure 9 shows the electrical diagram of a perfect transformer.

Transformers operate in 3 areas:

  • energy distribution and conversion ;

  • converter realization ;

  • galvanic isolation.
