5. Protecting data exchanges over a radio link
Historically, before RSN was defined, radio link security was ensured by the WEP solution. Since then, higher-level security solutions – TKIP and CCMP – have been defined. In the rest of this paragraph, we refer to MPDU (802.11 MAC Protocol Data Unit ) and MSDU (802.11 MAC Service Data Unit ).
An MPDU corresponds to a frame to be transmitted on the 802.11 network, and an MSDU to a set of useful data to be transmitted and integrated into the MPDU frame before transmission on the network. An MSDU is generally (except in the case of fragmentation) smaller in size than an MPDU, as the protocol very often adds information elements to the frame to be transmitted, for example to check its integrity.
