9.1 Frequency diversity

CDMA systems, because of the large bandwidth of a radio channel, are less affected than other systems by propagation disturbances such as fading. For example, frequency-selective fading will only affect part of the 1.23 MHz channel over which each call is spread, whereas it could disrupt a 200 kHz channel (GSM) much more severely if it affected just that frequency.

if we consider a fading of 12 dB over a width of 400 kHz, it affects one third of the CDMA radio channel, and as the energy of the telephone call is evenly distributed over the entire 1.23 MHz width of the channel, the effect must be seen by its average, which ultimately represents a disturbance of 2 dB.
