1.1 Multi-interface terminals

Terminals such as smartphones and personal computers are now capable of activating and operating multiple logical interfaces linked to one or more physical interfaces. Such terminals are known as multi-interfaces (MIF).

Several IP addresses can then be assigned to these MIF terminals so that they can connect to different types of network, such as a fixed network, a mobile network or a WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network), either simultaneously or at a later time. These IP addresses can be :

  • belong to the same address family or to different address families (IPv4, IPv6 or both);

  • have different life spans;
