4. Maintenance operations in IP networks

Maintenance operations are regularly carried out by network operators on transmission and switching equipment. The main purpose of these operations is to update the software version of a router in order to correct security flaws or provide new functionalities, and/or to increase the capacity of a link/router in order to cope with increased traffic.

Compared with breakdowns, these events are planned. It is therefore possible to handle them differently using this knowledge of the future.

Example

if it's necessary to disable a link or router, ideally routing should adapt before the event so that traffic avoids network elements that will no longer be functional.
