1. General principles of RFID
To transmit information to an interrogator (also known as a "base station" or, more generally, a "reader"), an RFID tag is fitted with an electronic chip and an antenna. This assembly, called an inlay, is then packaged to withstand the conditions in which it will live. The resulting assembly is called a tag, label or transponder. Figure 1 shows the components of an RFID system: tag, interrogator and host system.
