COTDR
Refers to the two possible techniques used to detect the backscattered signal and locate an optical fault on the line fiber: direct detection and sequence correlation (Correlation Optical Time Domain Reflectometry) or coherent detection (Coherent Optical Time Domain Reflectometry).
DSF; Dispersion Shifted Fiber
Designates the first type of fiber used in optical amplification submarine links, and is characterized by chromatic dispersion that cancels out at a wavelength around 1,560 nm, as opposed to earlier optical fibers whose chromatic dispersion cancels out in the window around 1,300 nm.
